The Ledge

There is not enough money in this world to get me to climb on to one of those balconies at the Sears Tower. Have you seen them? Glass boxes that jut out from the building on the 103rd floor. Little observation booths, made entirely of glass. There's nothing between you and the ground below except for a floor of glass that's an inch and a half thick.

Just looking at other people standing on them gives me the chills. I'm not sure I would even get out of the elevator on the floor with those balconies, that's how far away from them I want to stay. (See, wind currents in these tall, tall buildings can be funny things, so what if some weird gust of wind blew me on to one of those ledges? It's really safest just to avoid the 103rd floor entirely.)

How about you? Would you have the nerve to step out onto that glass floor 103 stories up? Or will you be joining me in Chickenville?

I was kind of thinking the same thing yesterday when I saw the news about this--just the pictures of it made my stomach do flip-flops.

That being said, I'll probably have to try them if I ever go back to the Sears Tower--"do the thing you're afraid to" and all of that....

I think that whole facing your fears thing is overrated. I think fear is good. I think fear is sensible. Fear is your body warning you, "this thing is bad. It could kill you, or at least cause great bodily harm. I want no part of this thing."

I embrace my fears because I trust myself. Why don't you trust yourself, Meryl? ;)

I get vertigo upstairs at the Urban Outfitters in Lawrence. No way I'm going in those rooms with the glass boxes.

One more ticket to Chickenville! There is no reason to get out on that ledge. I believe that whenever I do something like that or anything that I fear, I have to be ready to die doing it and be okay with it. If I'm not okay with it, then I don't do it.

People always say, oh nothing could happen, etc. Well, there are millions of law books filled with cases where none of those things were supposed to happen. But they did!
